About our YOGA classes: The YOGA classes we teach are a hybrid of vinyasa flow yoga and mindful hatha yoga. Vinyasa flow is an athletic form of yoga where one pose flows into the next, like a moving meditation.  The postures are connected through the breath for a transformative and balancing effect.

In mindful hatha yoga, we focus more on holding poses and breathwork (pranayama).  Most of the physiological and psychologial benefits of yoga come from the holding of a pose (asana).

Most of the poses can be modified depending on your flexibility and strength.  Blocks and straps are often used as props to modify poses for different levels of expertise and to prevent injury.

What will you learn?

  • Standing poses, balance poses, gentle backbends, twists, forward bends, hip openers, simple arm balances
  • Breathing exercises to improve concentration or relieve anxiety
  • Guided relaxation sequences to relieve stress, insomnia, and depression
  • Yoga is noncompetitive; and every time you come to your mat, it is 'practice'; yoga practice is always a 'work in progress'
  • You will learn to honor the limits of our body, pushing them forward when it is time.
*CLASSES FOR SUMMER 2009*
  • Beginning Yoga (Tues / Thurs at 6:00-7:00 pm; please email your interest to benderyoga@aol.com)
  • Power Yoga

  • Intermediate Yoga (six weeks prior practice required)

What to wear to Yoga Class:

Wear something comfortable that you can ‘move’ in, and layers of stretchy clothing if you get chilled easy. Capri pants or gym shorts with biking shorts underneath work well.  Avoid really baggy clothing as its hard for your instructor to see your alignment.

What equipment do I need?

Mats and blocks are generally available, but you may eventually want to buy your own mat (see yoga resource page).  Straps are usually available, but it’s helpful to bring your own if you keep with the practice.

Yoga is not just about stretching our bodies or breathing in special ways, yoga also teaches us to pay attention to those little things that make life less stressful and more meaningful. It can be life-transforming if practiced regularly. Ultimately a regular practice will be daily, and there are subtle ways of introducing yoga into your life and 'living your yoga'.  It is about being in harmony with your body, mind and spirit. Anyone who continues with a regular yoga practice will become of subtle, positive changes in their approach to life.
